Tour
the
Maine
Coon
Cattery!
Our
cattery consists of a basement, kittening room and stud house with attached
kennel. We hope to have it all in one building with outdoor runs
some day!
The
Basement
The
basement is approximately 400 square feet and is now divided into kennels.
It was unfinished when I started my breeding program so I sealed and painted
the brick walls, installed indoor/outdoor carpeting to cover the cement
floor and put up fluorescent lights that are on timers so I can set the
day length. I installed an exhaust fan that draws the stale air to
the outside and I run air purifiers so the cats have a constant supply
of fresh air. I have four large kennels for the females where I usually
keep two per section and I have one stud kennel at the end of the room.
There is a radio on all day to keep the cats company when I'm not visiting
with them. They seem to be very content to have their own space where
they can do as they please.

The
Kittening Room
My
back porch is the kittening room and is about 100 square feet. There
are two large windows that look out over the deck and back yard where I
have a carpeted ledge that the cats and kittens can get on to look outside.
This room works well for the kittens since it has linoleum on the floor
and is very easy to disinfect. I also use it as a quarantine room
when I bring new cats or kittens in for my breeding program.
I am hoping to have the deck screened off so the cats and kittens can go
from the kittening room to the outside.

The
Stud House / Kennel
The
stud house is a 6 foot by 6 foot insulated building with two windows, a
people door and a cat door. The inside walls are covered with masonite
and the floor is covered with linoleum for easy cleaning and disinfection.
The cat door leads out into a 6 foot by 12 foot kennel that has a roof
over it to protect the cats from the weather. The building is heated
with a baseboard heater during the winter to keep it warm. In the
summer when it gets hot I put a large fan outside with a mister attached
to it that is also attached to my hose and it sends a cool mist into the
kennel for the cats to cool themselves. I keep my male, Samir, in
this area and usually have at least one female with him to keep him company.
The girls all get a chance to be outside on a rotating basis which they
really enjoy. I am planning to have another stud house built for
my other male, Calypso, so he can be outside too.

*The
wonderful Maine Coon sign hanging in front of the kennel was given to me
by my good friend, Cherie Lachance. She bred the cats that started
my cattery and we became, and remain, good friends. Cherie has retired
from breeding her cats and gave me her wonderful sign! It was made
by a friend of hers using a chainsaw and it is one of my most treasured
possessions.*
We
hope you enjoyed the tour!
